[Closed on 21 January 2012]

In January 2011 a discussion paper (Consumer Engagement Strategy for Disability) was circulated by the Department for Families and Communities (DFC) presenting options for a model of engagement for disability.

Feedback to the discussion paper recommended the adaptation of a disability register to more effectively engage the community.

The proposed DFC SA Disability Register will be a contact list of persons who have
nominated to provide independent advice on broad issues concerning disability

South Australia's Strategic Plan

[Results expected 31 March 2011]
South Australia’s Strategic Plan (SASP) is a blueprint for our prosperity and wellbeing, to deliver a society where health, equality, safety, enterprise and creativity underpin a quality of life that is the envy of the world.

The South Australian Government uses the plan to help shape its directions and investment:

New government initiatives must outline how they achieve the plan’s targets when they are submitted to Cabinet for approval

The lead agencies in government report progress against the plan’s targets every six months and this is collated in a biennial progress report from the Community Engagement Board.

The annual State Budget is framed around the plan

The plan sets a high-level framework for more detailed planning by the State Government. For example, planning documents, such as the 30-Year Plan for Greater Adelaide and Water for Good, fit under the plan and help to achieve its targets and objectives.

Chief Executives from all State Government agencies are accountable for achieving the plan’s targets as part of their personal ‘performance agreements’

Directions for Alternative Care in South Australia 2010-2013

[Results expected 29 October 2010]
The Department for Families and Communities has developed the Directions for Alternative Care in South Australia 2010-2013 (the Directions) in an endeavour to move the alternative sector forward with a shared vision and purpose.

The strategies proposed aim to address both the immediate and future demand on the South Australian alternative care sector. Crucial to success is a partnership approach with non government organisations , peak body representatives, other government agencies, and the community sector. The Department for Families and Communities acknowledges that collaborative engagement with the Sector must continue as the foundation for successfully achieving these initiatives.

Many agencies have contributed to the National Compact Consultation Paper and/or the Productivity Commissions study into the Contribution of the Not-For-Profit Sector in 2009. These prior submissions to the Australian Government could assist agencies in informing their response to the Directions.

National Carer Strategy

[Closed on 4 January 2011]
The Australian Government is leading the development of a National Carer Recognition Framework (Framework) to better recognise carers as part of its response to the report: Who Cares …? Report on the inquiry into better support for carers by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family, Community, Housing and Youth.

The Carer Recognition Bill 2010 is the first element of the Framework and was introduced into Parliament on 29 September 2010. This Bill complements existing legislation in many States and Territories and is an important first step in giving carers the recognition they deserve.

The National Carer Strategy (Strategy) is the second element of the Framework and is being developed in consultation with State and Territory Governments and with input from carers, carer support organisations and service providers.

The Strategy will formally acknowledge the vital role of carers. The strategy will provide a national framework for the development and implementation of policies, programs and services for carers as well as bring together the different reform agendas that impact on carers across governments over the next 10 years.
